What to wear for a Portrait session?

Basically you should wear something that you are comfortable in and/or that fits with the style of image that you would like taken of yourself or your family - casual, formal, seasonal etc.   There are a few general guidelines that can be followed in regards to wearing clothes that are neutral or complimentary in colour and without bold patterns or logos, as in a group photo the person wearing the stand out colour or pattern will end up being the main focus of the image.  Sometimes this can work very well for a creative image, if that is what you are after.   For more ideas in regards to what to wear we are more than happy to discuss this with you further at the time of booking your Portrait session.

Do you shoot Black & White or Colour photographs?

When shooting a Portrait session, we photograph in colour which then gives you the choice afterwards to decide if you would prefer a colour or black & white version of a particular image.   We will discuss with you prior to the commencement of the Portrait session your general preference for the final image and this can be included in the final image processing.

During a Portrait Session - How many photos do you take?

There is no set 'number' of shots taken during a Portrait session, and we honestly don't even count.  It is more important that we capture images that you will love and will take as many as is needed to achieve this during the session.

How long will a Portrait Session take to photograph?

Generally a successful Portrait session will take around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending of course on how many individuals or people in a group to be photographed.   However we are more concerned about capturing great images than looking at the clock - and it will take as long as necessary to achieve the best possible results.   However particularly photographing young children, if they are not comfortable or responding to being photographed on the day, this can sometimes take a bit longer for them to relax.   Alternatively we can always reschedule the shoot, for no extra charge, for another time when they could be in a better mood or frame of mind to enable relaxed and happy images to be captured.

When is the best time of day for a baby portrait session?

All babies are different, and we are more than happy to work in with you and your baby's schedule when arranging a Portrait session time.   The best time of day can also depend on the type or style of image that you would like captured.   For newborns, if you are wanting the more classic black & white style of peaceful baby shots, these are often best captured after feeding and into their 'sleepy' stage.   But if you are wanting more lively and wide awake shots, these are often best taken after having a good nap and a snack.  You know your child's best times better than anyone, and also the style of images you would like, so don't hesitate to discuss this when booking your Portrait session.

What is the best age to have photos taken of my new baby?

This question is a bit harder to answer and really comes down to the type of shots you would like captured.  If you would like the fresh newborn look then booking these as soon after your baby is born that you are comfortable with is best, as this stage can last such a short time.   If you would prefer to wait until they are able to sit up and focus their attention, then by all means wait until this stage.    All the stages of a child's infancy are special and precious moments to capture and it really is up to you.  Having worked with infants as young as one week old, we are very conscious and aware of ensuring that baby, and yourself, are as relaxed and comfortable as possible to have a special and enjoyable Portrait session.

Should I have my makeup specially done for my portrait session?

This is really a personal choice, as some people are more comfortable with minimal and natural makeup - and a Portrait session is about capturing 'you'.  However if you would prefer to wear makeup, better results can sometimes be achieved by having your makeup done professionally prior to the Portrait session.   We can arrange a makeup artist to assist with this, for an additional fee, if you are interested and this can be arranged when booking your session.

Will my Portrait session be done in the studio or at another location?

The choice is yours and totally depends on the type of image you would like captured.  Photographs taken in our fully air conditioned studio have the advantage of being temperature comfortable all year round and also enable total control of lighting.   We are however more than happy to shoot your Portrait session on location using available light or flash, and can arrange the session for the best time of day to work with the light at the location.  If you have a particular location you would like your Portrait taken, we would prefer to scout the location in advance to ensure that the best possible site and time of day is chosen to suit.  Advance scouting and travel fees may be applicable depending on the location chosen.   We have a number of suitable outdoor locations that we regularly shoot at, and this can be discussed with you when booking your session.
